First and foremost is always have a programmer’s mindset. It means you have to be open-minded and focused on your potential user’s preferences, not on your own design likes. To do so, not only do you have to be familiar with different programming languages, but also be ready to analyze data to find out how your clients behave.
The big decision is always whether you go for Multiplatform development or for several native apps. On one hand, cross-platform approaches lower cost and time of development, but on other hand it might cause some problems with platform updates, and there are fewer tools for that.
Users get used to new features very quickly, so it is important to be up-to-date with, e.g., new gestures such as long touch or double touch.
